Le compteur sous l'escalier

It’s the third time the slow dance has started again. I ask them to stop it. Nobody listens to me. I follow the black cable as far as the stairs. Under the steps, the electrical box hums.

C'est la troisième fois que le slow recommence. Je demande qu'on l'arrête. Personne ne m'écoute. Je longe le câble noir jusqu'à l'escalier. Sous les marches, le coffret bourdonne.

I put two fingers on the main switch. The plastic is warm. Behind me, they sing the refrain again. Nobody listens to me. I lower the switch.

Je pose deux doigts sur le levier général. Le plastique est tiède. Derrière moi, ils reprennent le refrain. Personne ne m'écoute. Je baisse le levier.

The music stops. The freezers too. In the dark, the guests sing louder. My mother calls my sister just once. I open my mouth. Nothing comes out.

La musique s'arrête. Les congélateurs aussi. Dans le noir, les invités chantent plus fort. Ma mère appelle ma sœur une seule fois. J'ouvre la bouche. Rien ne sort.

A green marble goes down a step. Someone looks for a socket with a bicycle light. I keep my hand on the hot plastic. A foot finds mine before the light.

Une bille verte descend une marche. Quelqu'un cherche une prise avec une lampe de vélo. Je garde la main sur le plastique chaud. Un pied trouve le mien avant la lumière.

I raise the switch again. It sticks halfway. The room comes back in pieces: a fridge, a lamp, then the speaker. The slow dance doesn’t start again.

Je remonte le levier. Il reste à mi-course. La salle revient par morceaux : un frigo, une lampe, puis l'enceinte. Le slow ne repart pas.

In the storeroom, the dessert cream tilts in the bowls. I take my hand away. The box keeps humming.

Dans la réserve, la crème des desserts penche dans les coupes. Je retire ma main. Le coffret continue de bourdonner.
