Lyrics
At nine o’clock, we come back to the gymnasium. The scooter stalls in front of the wall. My dress still catches on the seat. You push the door open. A hen passes between us. I keep my helmet on.
À neuf heures, nous revenons au gymnase. Le scooter cale devant le mur. Ma robe accroche encore la selle. Tu pousses la porte. Une poule passe entre nous. Je garde le casque sur la tête.
We go in anyway.
On entre quand même.
The chairs rise in stacks. My mother holds a broom. My father closes a black bag. I start counting. Ten was what we’d asked for. I stop at twenty-seven. You carry on without me.
Les chaises montent en tas. Ma mère tient un balai. Mon père ferme un sac noir. Je commence à compter. Dix, c'était notre demande. Je m'arrête à vingt-sept. Tu continues sans moi.
Sixty-three.
Soixante-trois.
At the town hall: ten chairs. When we arrived: sixty-three. With every extra cousin, my chair changed places. We had counted the steps to the gate.
À la mairie : dix chaises. À notre arrivée : soixante-trois. À chaque cousin de plus, ma chaise changeait de place. Nous avions compté les pas jusqu'à la grille.
And tried the ring road.
Et essayé la rocade.
A boule comes out from under the radiator. The purple shuttlecock is in the cheese. The cage is open. Someone finds a hairpin. You hold a table towards me. I take the other end.
Une boule sort du radiateur. Le volant violet est dans le fromage. La cage est ouverte. Quelqu'un retrouve une épingle. Tu me tends une table. Je prends l'autre bout.
Ten chairs.
Dix chaises.
Sixty-three.
Soixante-trois.
Ten.
Dix.
Sixty-three.
Soixante-trois.
The last table refuses to fold. You push with your knee. I pull the catch.
La dernière table refuse de plier. Tu pousses du genou. Je tire le verrou.
Again.
Encore.
It jams.
Ça bloque.
Again.
Encore.
I put my hands underneath. You do the same. The table suddenly moves again. We stay with all four hands under the tabletop.
Je passe les mains dessous. Tu fais pareil. La table repart d'un coup. Nous restons à quatre mains sous le plateau.
